Your resume has two readers: an applicant tracking system (ATS) that parses it into fields, and a recruiter who skims it in under a minute. A good resume serves both. The rules below apply whether you apply directly or through a referral.

Use a simple, ATS-friendly format

  • Single column, standard fonts, clear section headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education.
  • Save as a PDF unless the portal asks for Word, and name the file FirstName_LastName_Role.pdf.
  • Avoid tables, text boxes, icons, images and progress bars for skills. Parsers often drop them.
  • Freshers: one page. Experienced candidates: up to two pages.

Write a sharp summary

Two to three lines stating your role, years of experience, core stack and the kind of problems you solve. Skip generic phrases like "hard-working team player"; replace them with specifics.

Mirror the job description

Read the posting and note the required skills and tools. If you genuinely have them, use the same terms in your skills and experience sections. "Node.js" and "NodeJS" may be treated differently by some parsers, so match the posting where you can.

Show impact, not responsibilities

Replace "Worked on backend APIs" with a result: Built REST APIs in Node.js that cut average response time by 40%. Use the pattern action + what + result, and add numbers whenever you honestly can.

Projects matter, especially for freshers

  • Pick two or three projects relevant to the role.
  • Give each a one-line purpose, the stack used and one measurable outcome or feature.
  • Link to GitHub or a live demo and make sure the code is readable.

Include a professional email, phone number, city, LinkedIn and GitHub or portfolio. Make sure your LinkedIn matches your resume because referrers and recruiters will check it.

Mistakes that get resumes rejected

  1. Typos and inconsistent formatting.
  2. A long objective statement instead of a focused summary.
  3. Listing every technology you have ever touched. Prioritise those relevant to the role.
  4. Unexplained gaps. Add a short line (course, freelancing, caregiving) rather than leaving silence.
  5. Exaggerating skills you cannot demonstrate. Interviewers will test them, and you can rehearse with the AI mock interview.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include a photo on my resume in India?

For most IT and corporate roles, no. A photo adds nothing for the ATS and can distract from your skills. Follow the instructions if a specific company requests one.

How long should a fresher resume be?

One page. Put skills, projects and education first, and cut anything that does not support your target role.

Is a PDF or a Word resume better?

PDF keeps formatting stable and is accepted by most systems. Use Word only if the application specifically asks for it.

How often should I update my resume?

Update it whenever you finish a project, change roles, or learn a relevant skill, and tailor it slightly for each application.
